Interview
With A Birds
of Prey Extra
Imagine moving to California and making appearances in some well
buzzed-about shows to start off your career. That's what's happened
for twenty-year-old Hans Hernke, who is appearing in at least
two episodes of Birds of Prey which will likely air in October.
How
did this adventure begin? "I was listening to the Central [Casting]
Hotline and they had a rush-call for Birds of Prey,"
Hans said. "I responded immediately to the call, got booked
on the shoot, went back to my apartment to gather some wardrobe
and headed to the Warner Brothers Ranch in Burbank. I reported to
the set, checked in with the AD, and that's where the fun began,
and I started to ask people what the show was about!"
"The
sets were amazing," Hans told Gotham Clock Tower. "I have
been on many high school sets, this one was just different and futuristic
looking. I really liked how they lit the hallways and the classrooms,
and adding the smoke/fog added a really cool effect to the scenes,
especially in the classroom with Dina Meyer. The set was pretty
cold too, I don't blame them, those lights are hot anyway!"
Hans'
role as an extra portraying a student meant that he appeared in
scenes set in New Gotham High School in the episodes "Slick"
and "Prey for the Hunter." (For more episode details,
go to the Birds
spoilers page!) In "Slick," he appeared in a scene
featuring Dina Meyer (Barbara) and Shawn Christian, who plays Barbara's
love interest, Wade. In "Prey," Hans is in the lounge
and in the hallway in a scene where Dinah (Rachel Skarsten) has
some negative dealings with her classmates. One of the scenes in
"Prey for the Hunter" also includes Dina Meyer.
What
did Hans think of working with the cast? "They seem very focused
on what the director tells them to do. They are also very patient.
Rachel likes to smile and chat. Dina I've rarely seen between takes
except when she's doing her scenes. Shawn is a pretty focused and
laid back actor as well. They were all great to work with!"
Hans
also was very impressed with the Birds crew. "The craft
service is very good and there's plenty of food to choose from!
Thanks for keeping us fed guys!!! Tim Cooney, the sound man, was
a very cool guy to talk to. He was telling me all these cool stories
about working with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts. I hope he wins
the Oscars this year if "We Were Soldiers" gets best sound
nomination. He certainly deserves it."
"Everyone
on the set seemed very patient, and easy to work with," Hans
added. "The AD's were very nice as well. It's always great
to be on a set that everyone is working together in a positive way.
The team is working hard around the clock to make a fantastic new
series, and when it airs, they will be happy that their hard work
paid off!"
Hans
is currently attending the New York Film Academy through November,
but he hopes to return to the show when he's done. "I would
love to get an agent soon and start auditioning for parts,"
Hans said. "I am just very happy to be working on a great show
such as this."
Attentive
fans will also find Hans Hernke in upcoming episodes of series such
as Family Affair, Do Over, and Judging Amy. At the New York Film
Academy at Universal Studios, he also recently directed a short
film. "[It has been] totally awesome! I recommend those courses
for any actor or actress! So I'm here in L.A., very happy to be
up and working again! It has been a blessing from God!"
